Media Magic: Finding Myself Through Magical Girls

I’ve been dedicated to my tarot practice since 2023, but have been fascinated with all magical things since I can remember. As many young witches-to-be, I discovered my voice through media and pop culture via series like Winx Club, Disney Fairies, W.I.T.C.H., and Sailor Moon. “Magical girl” media, which was so popular in the 1990’s, opened a door for me that never closed. While the series I obsessed over were works of pure fiction, they guided the way I appreciated nature, developed friendships, found power within myself, and discovered my own gender expression.

These stories were also a gateway for me diving deeper into folklore and examine how it can fit into my own spiritual life. Many of these stories involved the characters discovering magical powers, but as many millennials, I used these stories to connect with others who were interested in magic in the real world. I remember being a pre-teen and discovering a thread on a Winx Club forum that detailed a “spell” that would reveal what elemental power calls to you. I remember sitting in my room, reading the steps, and going through the motions. At the time, I didn’t realize I was really doing my first visualization and grounding exercise. I felt so magical by the end, and so empowered! I remember, from then on, being enamored by the spellcraft that I would find from these forums. While the fantasy of it all was at the forefront of my practices at the time, it instilled a lifelong curiosity of all the possibilities that lie in the spaces between known science, the psychological self, and the unknown.

Today, I navigate the world with an eclectic approach, viewing my divination and other practices through the lenses of psychological science, historical symbolisms, animism, and folkloric traditions to meet others where they are and round out my thinking through many different perspectives.

While my practice has grown and matured throughout my lifetime, I continue to share the same curious sense of discovery that I had as a child. I hope to share the knowledge I’ve gained along the way here in hopes that you, with your own intentions, may feel the same spark ignite that I did all those years ago. I hope the fire within you continues to burn in all that you wish to accomplish. In the meantime, I’m always here to lend a hand.
